GENERAL SITE TYPE Chamber Tomb

1.    Cem.   Ålin [1962], 105    'Nach Raubgrabungen mehrerer Kammergräber um 1880 sind von Papadimitriou und Theocharis 1953 - 57 etwa 14 neugefundene Gräber derselben Nekropole ausgegraben worden.'

NOTE

1. I do not know where this site is. It is described as being in the vicinity of the seaside resort of Voula, on the border between Voulas and Glyphada, and about 500 m. EAST of the highway to Sounion. This area has been heavily built over and so all trace of these chamber tomb complexes may now be lost. I have placed the marker as described above and for purposes of comprehension the long park running from the highway east along Ippokratous may be as good a candidate as any. The sequence of discoveries is described in Privitera [2013], 114-117. The following is taken from his account; the page numbers are his:

First discoveries: Halyki Glyphadas 1880-1890. Objects sold in the market.
In area of Halyki: 1919 A. Kermamopoullos. 50 Mycenaean chamber tombs (C1534)
1927: Other investigations undertaken by N. Kyparissis but no report.
1953-1957: New chamber tomb discovered 500 m. east of the road (C1535)
1953: Three Chamber tombs explored (north and west slopes of a low hill) p. 114
1954: Five Chamber tombs explored (north and west slopes of a low hill) p. 115 (C5066)
1955 Papadimitriou explored another six tombs to the west of the tombs in (no. 5, no. 6) illustrated in fig. 64. (Two were explored in 1956)
In that same complex Papadimitriou explored 17 tombs, most chamber tombs. (p. 117)
In 1989 two new tombs were discovered in the same complex as no. 6. (C5066)
