1. Pithos Burial. AJA[1960], 71 'A plain pithos, ..., was found 1.50 m. below the modern surface during the digging of a cesspool.'PERIOD (High Chronology)

a. AJA[1960]: 71, 'The date of the Aigaleos group is the last quarter of the eighth century, between 720 and 710 B.C.'
NOTE
1. The marker is placed following the directions from AJA [1960] 71, 'It was found in 1954 in Aigaleos, a suburb of Athens along the Sacred Way to Eleusis before the pass through the Aigaleos range, at the crossing of the Kephissos River (Curtius and Kaupert, Karten von Attika, Sheet III upper right. The canalized Kephissos is now crossed by the Sacred Way at the Church of St. George). The burial was located two blocks west of the Sacred Way.' The church of St. George is at F3658. The directions 'two blocks west of the Sacred Way' are ambiguous because the Sacred Way runs nearly E-W at this point. I placed the marker at the intersection of Filippoupoleos and Markou Mpotsari and set the accuracy radius to 100 m. This site was contributed by Professor Alex Knodell (Carleton College).
