NOTES
1. Placement based on remarks in Warren et al. [1974]. There the authors say (302) 'In the foothills at the north-east end of the gorge lies the cave of Perivolia, called the Mameluke's Hole, ...' The gorge being referred to, as is clear from the previous paragraph, is that of Therissos. This gorge runs from S to N and debouches at Garipa, just to the S of Perivolia. Topoguide marks a cave at the coordinates I have used and I suppose this to be the right place even though I have marked it 'N'. In Témoignages archéologiques et épigraphiques en Crète occidentale du Néolithique au Minoen Récent III B by Louis Godart and Yannis Tzedakis (1992) 47 we read '7. Perivolia (grotte de Mamelouko) Cette grotte se trouve au lieu-dit Charôdia, à environ une heure à pied du village de Perivolia, à une distance de quelque 6 km. au Sud-Ouest de La Canée; on l'appelle aussi "Le trou du Mamelouk".' Baird places the 'Mameloukou Trypa' at 35.474765° N, 23.995244° E although it does not fit the constraints imposed by Godart and Tzedakis nor is it in the Gorge of Therissos.
2. With respect to placement see also the remarks in Faure [1969] 203. '..., au flanc ouest du mont Plakarolithi, à 1,200 km (sic) au sud-est de Perivolia (Kydonias): ...'. The toponym Plakarolithi is not known to me.
