GENERAL SITE TYPE  Shipwreck

TYPE

1.    Shipwreck.   Davidson [2019],     'Archaeologists may have found the world's oldest shipwreck after unearthing a trade vessel from 3,600 years ago off the coast of British holiday favourite Antalya.'
2.    Shipwreck.   Öniz [2019],     ' ... a new Bronze Age shipwreck has been discovered in the same waters as the Gelidonia and Uluburun shipwrecks ... '

PERIOD (High Chronology)

1. Middle Bronze Age: (2100 BC - 1550 BC)

2. Late Helladic II: (1635 BC - 1410 BC)
    a.    Öniz [2019]: , 'Comparison with the Kyme Ingots, the Bucholz/Bass classification and the prevalence of the shape in Egyptian representations all point to the possibility that the wreck should be dated to the 16th - 15th centuries BC.'

NOTES

1.  Davidson [2019] is an article from a general circulation newspaper which reproduces several good photographs of the shipwreck.

2.  The Öniz [2019] online article was not divided into pages and consequently I could not provide page numbers. For those who have access this short article is best consulted, perhaps, in the pages of the Palestine Exploration Quarterly.

3.  No detailed information about the wreck location is available to me. The marker has been placed notionally in Finike Bay which is dominated by the town of Kumluca (F5221).

4.  Two articles from general circulation newspapers:
  • The Daily Sabah, August 4, 2019, no author, 'Turkish archaeologists discover the world's 'oldest' Bronze Age shipwreck off Antalya coast' is online here.
  • Bible History Daily April 18, 2019, by Samuel D. Pfister, 'Copper Ingots Found in Ancient Shipwreck off Turkish Coast', is online here.
