GENERAL SITE TYPE  Settlement

TYPE

1.    Chamber Tomb.   Kanta [1980], 14    'A chamber tomb with "Late Mycenaean" pottery ... is reported by Taramelli ...'

2.    Settlement.   Nowicki [2000], 180    '..., the Dark Age settlement is buried here beneath later layers.'

PERIOD (High Chronology)

1. Late Minoan IIIB: (1330 BC - 1200 BC)

    a.    Nowicki [2000]: 181 'The earliest pottery may be dated back to the late LM IIIB phase.'

2. Late Minoan IIIC: (1200 BC - 1075 BC)

    a.    Nowicki [2000]: 180 'The best deposit of LM IIIC, PG and G date was found under the Temple A and B (7th century B.C.).'

    b.    Kanta [1980]: 14 'A late LM III C date would perhaps be more appropriate for both groups, ...', 'The Minoan sherds were LM III C in date ..'

3. Protogeometric: (1100 BC - 900 BC)

    a.    Nowicki [2000]: 180 'The best deposit of LM IIIC, PG and G date was found under the Temple A and B (7th century B.C.).'

4. Geometric: (900 BC - 700 BC)

    a.    Nowicki [2000]: 180 'The best deposit of LM IIIC, PG and G date was found under the Temple A and B (7th century B.C.).'

NOTE

1.  Nowicki [2000] defines the term 'Dark Age' on p. 16: 'The label Dark Age as a general historical term seems to be better than both Protogeometric and Early Iron Age and I will use it in that context when appropriate in this book. ... In Crete the best absolute dating would be very late LM IIIB to the early Geometric, i.e. some decades before 1200 (1230?) to c. 800 B.C.'
