Announcements, changes, and other notes for users of the Atlas.
August 17, 2026 Welcome to the Mycenaean Atlas Project. Project announcements, changes, temporary notices, and other messages to Atlas users will be posted here. August 17, 2026 Tne new Mycenaean Atlas is now largely integrated. I hope you enjoy the new screens. Work will be ongoing but should be minimally disruptive. There is a new mail-box form on this page ('Contact Us') and I strongly encourage you to use it. I genuinely want to hear from you and I want to know about any mistakes, gaps, or any other sort of infelicity that happens in this kind of work. Especially I want to hear about new sites. A couple of things to notice: the new splash page has an 'Ask Mycenaean Atlas' button. The product behind this button is a utility that allows users to form a set of sites and then ask questions about it or propose hypotheses. E.g. 'what pattern emerges with respect to all the sites in Arcadia?', 'Does the preponderance of sites being located near the shore say anything about the diet of the Mycenaean culture area?' This utility will then generate hypotheses and try to support them or contradict them. This is artificial intelligence based and uses ONLY the Mycenaean Atlas database - it does not go outside the fence. Now the bad news: This facility is only available to me on my own laptop. Why is that? It's because there is a monetary cost involved and while it only costs me pennies ($2.00 to develop the whole thing) I can't afford to support all of you lot. However I'm talking about it here because there may be some of you out there who would like to use this or a similar facility. They should get in touch with me and see about implementing it in your own environment. I'd gladly give away the code and the DB for that purpose. I should mention that the Mycenaean Atlas has a new spiffy appearance. This is entirely due to ChatGPT which, taking my own code, file by file, returned something improved and professional. So good, in fact, that I couldn't achieve such code in a thousand years. One last thing: the new Controls Page has a section for 'Habitation Size' and 'Distance to Coast'. Those two sections have buttons for 'Chart'. Those buttons don't work. I don't actually know why. The 'Map' buttons in those sections do work and, ironically, they show the charts. I may be removing those 'Chart' buttons in the future. Could ChatGPT have added them as a kind of AI joke? I don't know - I'll look into it some more. Write to us.
